Back to School
On Saturday, August 25, 2018, Who Is Your Neighborhood organized a community gathering at El Gran Burrito restaurant, which at that point was still located at the Vermont/Santa Monica intersection. The event featured various workshops, music, and dialogue for the local families of my neighborhood, including workshops on local issues such as Renter’s Rights, Women’s Self-Defense, and Youth Crisis/Intervention programs. For teens, workshops consisted of live art sessions, writing groups, a math workshop, and even a skate lesson. All of the facilitators for our workshops, like us, volunteered their time for the day, and all parents and students attending our workshops will received tickets for free school supplies. Following workshop, our guests were treated to lunch, from El Gran Burrito, as well as an Open Mic session, and the “Back to School” raffle. Items we gave to the community included backpacks, Metro TAP cards, a skateboard, bicycle, scooter, helmets, and more. The event ultimately brought together at least 50 members from the neighborhood and was the first ever of its kind for East Hollywood.
August 2018, East Hollywood

In August 2019, we did it again.

We hoped for a threepeat in 2020, but everyone knows how that went! Yet by 2021, we were at it again via Making Our Neighborhood: Redlining, Gentrification and Housing in East Hollywood
